Coconut Ghee

I’ve switched from my regular Nutiva coconut which I used to get from amazon for $21-$23 a 54 oz jar (vendor was and shipping was $.99 per item)  to the large gallon bottle in the picture.

Got this from, they’re in Nebraska – $39, plus shipping, total about $50 – worth every penny. Weighs like an elephant, incredible flavor. Totally organic – 75% coconut oil, 25% grassfed beef ghee – if you ever thought pure coconut oil was too coconut in flavor, this coconut ghee is the perfect oil for anything, including spreading on toast (when I toast my Ezekiel, I spread this coconut ghee and sprinkle a little toast, brings out the CG totally).

If you go to, you will read all about good oils. The small bottle in the photo used to be a 16oz ghee from Wholefoods for $8.99 – it got really expensive although I loved the flavor and ghee is so healthy.

This coconut ghee is now my regular cooking and non-cooking oil.

Also, I use it on my face as a moisturizer after I clean my face.  It’s desert winter now so it’s a good time to test this “new” moisturizer” – this coconut ghee works for me, my skin does not pull tight by afternoon.  I used to use Aubrey Organics Rosa Marqueta moisturizer, not any more, I love this coconut ghee.

Snacks – Apple Crisps – Figs – Almond Butter – Costco

Great snacks from Costco – been getting them for the last few months.

Barefruit has their own website and you can compare prices – at Costco this 11oz bag sells for $4.99, is $18 for pack of 2!   The figs are $7.99 for 2 pds – they are incredible tasting – I think Wholefoods has something similar for $4.99 a pound.  Both these figs and apple (bake-dried) are organic.  Since hubby is on low-sugar diet, these crisps are ideal.

That Maranatha almond butter is not organic  – 32 oz from Costco – $5.99!

Update – Bill Henderson – Bio-dentistry

Haven’t been posting for a while – busy!  But, I will try to update as soon as I can. Basically, hubby has been following Bill Henderson’s protocol (  His site is very informative with great articles in the archives.

For instance, hubby will be looking a bio-dentist to check and possibly  undo what previous dentists have done to his gums/teeth, particularly root canals which, wrongly implemented, can harbor bacteria that later cause chronic sickness.

Again will try to gather my notes and post more on this later.

If you are looking for specific info, you can drop a note and I will try to send you what info I have, if you can’t find the same in my blog.

Will be back.  Good health to you and yours.

Oil Pulling

Just found out about this.  Saw it on (where I got a gallon of organic coconut ghee for $39 plus ship).  Oil pulling!  Hubby and I started our two days ago.  Hubby said he noticed more phlegm.  We will be continuing this.   I was told Deepak Chopra endorses this highly.

Feb 27 2010 Update: On 5th day of oil pulling, noticed that most of the eczema on my elbow is gone, skin is smooth again. A few weeks later, eczema returned but like before. I am going to continue this OP – really should try to do it at least twice  a day. 3x a day is recommended if, say, candidia is suspected.

Oil Pulling Therapy: Effective Natural Detoxification, Stimulation of Elimination, Self-Help Cure and Prevention of Many Diseases Incl. Cancer?

The practice of oil pulling apparently is a time-honoured tradition in parts of the world, including in the ancient Indian medical system of Ayurveda. Oil pulling therapy simply consists in thoroughly sloshing certain types of commonly found oil in the mouth for up to 20 minutes (for details see Instructions: how oil pulling is done). This practice is said to draw toxins & destroy natural mouth germs while stimulating the body’s eliminatory system and increasing metabolism, thus leading to improved health and the conquering of disease.

In fact, thanks to this double action, oil pulling therapy is claimed (according to Dr. Karach MD) to have healed illnesses and complaints as diverse as bronchitis, tooth pain, diseased teeth, headaches & migraines, eczema, thrombosis, chronic sleeplessness, arthritis & related illnesses, diseases of stomach & intestines (such as ulcers, gastro-enteritis, peritonitis), kidney, liver, lung and heart disease, blood disorders (such as chronic blood diseases like leukemia), women’s diseases & hormonal disorders and diseases affecting the nervous system (such as encephalitis, meningitis, neuro-physiological paralysis). It is also said to prevent the growth of malignant tumors, to cut and heal them, to be a heart attack preventative, to cure diseases brought on by toxic drugs, and it is credited with thecure of diabetes.

Dr. Karach himself claims to have cured his own chronic blood disease of 15 years standing using the oil therapy and that the same method healed an “acute arthrosis” (which had made him bed-ridden) within three days.* Added benefits reported concern the fastening of loose teeth, the healing of bleeding gums and the visible whitening of teeth.

In other words, oil therapy is claimed (according to Dr. Karach MD)  to be some kind of panacea of both curative and preventative effect with the added bonus of potentially doubling the presently observed average human lifespan. Additionally, “in terminal diseases such as cancer, Aids and chronic infections, this treatment method has been shown to successfully replace all others. … a wide variety of symptoms have unquestionably disappeared without any side effects. … diseases which would normally be treated by an operation or by powerful or potent drugs, usually with significant side effects.”

Interestingly, oil pulling is also part of the daily morning routine prescribed in eminent conventional and alternative cancer treatment researcher Lothar Hirneise’s new cancer treatment center in Germany.

While it is likely that noone so far has done any placebo-controlled double-blind studies on the possible or actual benefits of oil pulling, so any healing reports so far published could be easily dismissed as simple anecdotes based on the powerful placebo effect, the simplicity,  apparent harmlessness as well as inexpensiveness of application of this biological healing/detoxification method (seeInstructions) and the possible rewards concerning internal detoxification to be reaped make it seem advisable to at least give oil pulling a thorough try. Perhaps, as Dr. Karach claims, oil therapy is indeed able to help heal the human organism in its entirety, to effectively treat all types of diseases and “in some cases enabling one to avoid surgical intervention and the taking of medications that can have harmful side effects”.

* writes in another place that “Dr. Karach has successfully healed a chronic leukemia patient with 15 years of harsh treatment methods behind him. Acute arthritis in 1 patient who was totally bedridden was removed from his body in 3 days with no inflammation apparent.”

Which oils to use

Recommended oils to use for oil pulling are sunflower and sesame oil, both of which have been found to be equally effective in healing diseases. Also mentioned are peanut oil and “distal oil”, the latter possibly being a mistranslation from the German Distelöl (safflower oil). Quote: “Other oils were not found to be as good/We have observed that any oil other than SUNFLOWER or SESAME may not be effective. Do not blame oil pulling by practicing with other oils.” Yet apparently, a normal refined sunflower oil as found in supermarkets has proved to be effective in numerous people. But “Our experience with thousands of people across the globe says USE COLD-PRESSED OIL as first choice, if it is not available use REFINED OIL.”

For patients following the Budwig diet & protocol, it is however imperative to exclusively go for organic cold-pressed oils. Even for the general reader, Healing Cancer Naturally recommends to always choose the best possible quality in foodstuffs, both in the interest of one’s own health and the environment.

Instructions: how oil pulling is done

In the morning before breakfast (i.e. on an empty stomach), take one tablespoon into the mouth (don’t swallow it). Move the oil slowly around your mouth, as you would when rinsing your teeth. While keeping your mouth closed, slosh the fluid around your oral cavity, pulling it through your teeth, sucking it etc. Do this for fifteen to twenty minutes. “Chewing” in this manner draws a lot of saliva and gradually dilutes the oil which becomes thoroughly mixed with saliva in the process. Swishing is said to activate the enzymes, with the enzymes drawing toxins out of the blood. As you continue this process, the oil-saliva mix gradually becomes more and more liquid and thin and acquires a whitish look (if the oil remains yellowish, it has not been pulled long enough).

Spitting and cleansing

The watery oil/saliva mix is then spat out. It must not be swallowed, for the liquid has become toxic from poisons being drawn from the circulation through the mucous membranes of the mouth. After spitting the oil, the oral cavity must be thoroughly rinsed and washed with water a number of times. Cleanse your teeth with a toothbrush or use your fingers; also properly clean the sink, because the liquid expelled contains large amounts of bacteria and other harmful/toxic bodily waste (apparently, a microscopic review would reveal microbes in their first stage of development in this liquid). “Pulling Oil pulls out disease elements from the system (body) and restores health.”

When to do oil pulling

Best time to do the oil pulling routine is said to be in the morning before breakfast (where it can easily be integrated into the rest of one’s morning routine).

Recommended frequency of oil pulling states that to enhance the claimed healing process, oil pulling can be repeated three times a day (always before meals on an empty stomach) but it also says that only the patient him or herself can answer this question depending on how s/he feels which tells him/her if s/he needs more or less applications of the oil pulling routine.

How  long to do the oil pulling advises to keep up the practice until one has recovered one’s original strength and freshness, enjoys good appetite and memory and regularly wakes up refreshed “without black circles under your eyes” after restful sleep.

When initial worsening of symptoms is observed

Patients suffering from more than one disease can experience a worsening of their situation in the beginning. Dr. Karach – like other naturopaths – believes that an apparent worsening of one’s state of health is a propitious sign (often referred to as healing crisis) indicating that your disease is disappearing. This includes healing fever. He advises not to interrupt the treatment when one’s state gets worse. In fact he believes that by discontinuing the oil pulling, one also interrupts the healing activities stimulated by the oil pulling.

Claimed time requirements to achieve healing/cure claims that oil pulling will speedily cure acute diseases in two to four days, while chronic diseases usually require more time, sometimes even one-year, and advises persistence in application.

Oil pulling caveats & precautions

(a) Don’t swallow the oil after completion of the process but spit it out. Do not worry, however, about any oil accidentally swallowed. It will simply be discarded through the normal elimination channels.

(b) If you are allergic to a particular brand of oil, change the brand or type of oil to a different one.

(c) One author (perhaps more) warns against oil pulling for people who carry amalgam fillings, claiming that even more mercury than “normal” will/could be released by this practice.

User Experiences & Results of Oil Pulling:
On Diseases reportedly cured by Oil Pulling

In 1996, an Indian daily news paper (Andhra Jyoti) conducted a survey among its readers on the effects of oil pulling on various diseases. 1041 readers responded, 927 (89%) of which reported healing effects (curing one or more diseases). 114 or 11% did not report any disappearance of symptoms/illnesses. The chronic diseases reportedly cured were the following:

Diseases like polio, cancer, leprosy, polycystic kidney, neural fibroma, paralysis etc.: 72 cases
Diseases pertaining to female reproductive system: 21 cases
Piles: 27 cases
Diabetes: 56 cases
Heart disease and blood pressure: 74 cases
Arthritis and joint pains: 91 cases
Constipation: 110 cases
Digestive system: 155 cases
Skin problems such as pigmentation, itching, scars, black patches, eczema etc.: 171 cases
Allergy and respiratory problems of lungs such as asthma, bronchitis etc.: 191 cases
Physical pains and problems with neck & head area: 758 cases

Cancer & joint pains: sample healing testimonies of chronic diseases

A homeopathic physician from India reports 3 cancer cases, two of which concern a “schirrus type of carcinoma of the uterus” (confirmed by biopsy report). Within two months of oil pulling, the bleeding was reduced, their general condition improved and both uterus carcinoma patients feel confident that their disease will be vanquished. “You know confidence/faith contributes to cure more than medicine.”
Compare Healing Cancer & Your Mind.

The third case involves a woman who developed a malignant tumor larger than a tennis ball on her jawbone (this patient is also on homeopathy medicines). After a month of oil pulling, pus was discharged from a hole that formed in the tumor on the jawbone. Three weeks later, the flow of pus stopped, the hole closed and the tumor reduced in size to be almost undetectable. “In these cases, my medicines must have given temporary relief. I am hoping they will totally heal.” The same physician adds this observation: “In case of joint pains the improvement that would have resulted in eight months with my medicines, have come within two moths of oil pulling.”

Diabetes – Pregnancy – Child birth
My age is 41 years. I am a diabetic patient with no children. After doing [oil pulling] for three months, I became pregnant. At the time of pregnancy, my blood sugar increased. I stopped [oil pulling] for about a month thinking it was aggravating my problem. Having come to know that aggravation is a sign of cure, I started [oil pulling] again. The sugar level came down and I continued [oil pulling] throughout my pregnancy. After a caesarian operation, I gave birth to a baby. The doctors checked for sugar, both for the baby and me. We both were free from sugar. The wound healed well and stitches removed on the seventh day. Doctor was astonished at this. I found [oil pulling] benefited me in the following ways:
[Oil pulling] reduced sugar gradually and diabetes cured. The skin became clear and shining and the spots on the body disappeared.
The body became strong, teeth firm; gums healthy and the hair turned black and stopped becoming white or gray.
Mrs AVL Umamaheswari, Commercial Tax Dept, Eluru, A.P.

At the advanced age of 74, it is unjust to expect miraculous result from any kind of therapy. Yet I must say that what I have experienced through [oil pulling] therapy is almost a miracle and quite unbelievable.
Diabetes has been troubling me for the past 13 years. Now my blood sugar level is normal, though I do not take any medicine. I have discontinued all medication including vitamins, enzymes etc.
(Swami Swarupanand Bharati, (K.R.K.Chetty,IPS,D.I.G.(Retd)), Hyderabad
© Copyright 2005-2006 writes that “additional research concerning Oil Therapy has now been thoroughly documented, especially with regard to physiological similarities between individuals.”

Who can Practice Oil Pulling Therapy?
Everybody above the age of five years can practice. For children of five years and above use only a teaspoon (five ml) of oil for Oil Pulling Therapy. PeOil Pulling Therapyle with dentures should remove them and practice. Woman can practice Oil Pulling Therapy during periods and also pregnancy.

What is the best time to practice Oil Pulling Therapy?
Ayurveda advised Oil Pulling Therapy in the morning after brushing teeth and cleaning tongue on empty stomach. Dr Karach advised Oil Pulling Therapy before breakfast on empty stomach. One hour after drinking water or tea or coffee or liquids in the morning but before breakfast. The best time is when you do not feel well for any health problem do Oil Pulling Therapy on empty stomach.

How much time gap is required to eat or drink after Oil Pulling Therapy?
After doing Oil Pulling Therapy, wash your mouth, and then you can eat or drink and no time gap is required.
What other Oils can be used for Oil Pulling Therapy?

Dr Karach had suggested refined sunflower Oil. Sesame Oil was prescribed in Ayurveda texts for Oil Pulling Therapy. Both oils worked well in curing health problems. Some found sesame oil better. Other oils have been used by some practitioners on their own, and they did not report desirable results to enable me to recommend. Some other oils may be suitable for particular problems, but I do not recommend for daily practice.

The quantity of 10 ml of oil is too little for Oil Pulling Therapy. Can we do with 20 ml of oil?

When we do Oil Pulling Therapy the entire oil should become thin, like water and no oily feeling should be left. When that happens, we would have utilized the entire oil for the purpose of Oil Pulling Therapy. This happens within 15 to 20 minutes for most of the peOil Pulling Therapyle. If the quantity is increased it takes more time to become watery and white and many would not like to spend more time on pulling. Spitting when it is still oily is waste of oil and a feeling of freshness does not come which is not desirable. If you feel a few ml of more oil is required to try, there is no harm. This is also the reason for suggesting only five ml of oil for children.

Can we do any other work while doing Oil Pulling Therapy?
No. It is advised to do Oil Pulling Therapy slowly, chin up preferably in sitting position, to see that oil pulled through teeth and touches all portions of mucous membrane in the oral cavity.

Is there any difference in the practice of Oil Pulling Therapy for Acute and Chronic diseases?

Acute diseases will be cured in two to four days by practicing Oil Pulling Therapy three times a day on empty stomach, before breakfast, lunch and dinner. Chronic diseases need more time may be up to one year or more depending on the condition of disease, age, habits, state of general health of the person, etc.

What problems arise during Oil Pulling Therapy?
(a) Oil does not become watery or thin even after 30 minutes, and it appears the oil is being absorbed and it reduces in quantity
(b) Nose block due to accumulation of mucus
(c) Sneezing and coughing
(d) Phlegm in the throat gets loose and comes into the mouth
(e) Urge to pass urine or stools.
(f) Oil does not become watery because there is inadequate salivation and mouth is dry. In most cases, it happens in the morning and in some cases evening also. Under normal circumstances oil will not get absorbed in the mouth. A main reason is lack of adequate salivation due to lack fluids in a body. In all such cases, you must drink two or three glasses of water, go for a walk of 30 to 45 minutes and do Oil Pulling Therapy after returning.

(f) To avoid nose block during Oil Pulling Therapy wash, clean and blow your nose before starting Oil Pulling Therapy. Slowly blow out a nose to clear while holding the oil in the mouth. Repeat if necessary as you continue Oil Pulling Therapy.

(g) Sensation/irritation may cause sneezing or coughing while doing Oil Pulling Therapy. Do Oil Pulling Therapy slowly in a relaxed state to avoid such an irritation. StOil Pulling Therapy pulling and relax as irritation or sensation to sneeze is felt. It will subside. You can sneeze or cough while holding oil in a mouth. If you have to sneeze or cough through mouth do it in the sink or some such place to avoid oil driblets spray all over or cover mouth with tissue paper.

(h) If phlegm comes into the mouth, making pulling inconvenient, spit and do pulling with fresh oil again.

(i) Urge to urinate or pass stools will arise only if you have not gone through natures calls before Oil Pulling Therapy. In all cases of urge to pass stools or urinate during Oil Pulling Therapy, the best is to relax on the commode and do Oil Pulling Therapy.
How long will it take to cure a particular disease?
How long it takes to cure a particular disease is difficult to specify because it depends on the age, state of health and disease, food and other habits etc of each person. Dr Karach however said that chronic diseases may take a year whereas acute diseases can be cured in 2 to 4 days. Practice until the original strength, freshness, calm sleep, good appetite and good remembrance are back again.

Now, let me get into the specifics of the method. Here is how one would do oil pulling:

1. Every morning, before eating anything, consume 1 tbspoon of cold pressed oil, but DO NOT actually swallow the oil! Slowly swish the oil in your mouth, sipping and sucking it through your teeth for up to 25 mins. Use a lot of saliva, and mix the two together often. Doing this will use your enzymes, which in turn will draw out harmful toxins out of your bloodstream. So make sure the oil isn’t swallowed – it will absorb toxins.

2. Continue swishing. As you continue swishing the oil, it eventually gets much more thin, and even turns white. Spit out a little into the sink. If the color is not white, it means you are not done. So continue oil pulling until the color of the oil is white.

3. After you’re done, clean your sink, because it may contain lots of harmful toxins that you just eliminated. People have actually taken small drops of the remnants, and view them under a microscope, only to view toxic substances.

Oil pulling will generally increase your metabolic rate, and thus your health. Another beneficial effect most people have is the curing of bleedy gums, and cleaner teeth. But of course, the main benefit lies in its restoration of health.

I’ve done oil pulling for over a few months, and at first I didn’t really notice any benefits. However, after 2 months I can now attribute my lively energy, and my healthy digestion to oil pulling.

Here are some tips to keep in mind while oil pulling:

1) Do it the first thing before eating any breakfast. If you have any chronic ailments such as acne, or candida, you should do oil pulling more than once a day, but do it on an empty stomach.

2) Please do not swallow the cold-pressed oil while swishing. The oil will be contaminated with toxins as it draws it out. If you do swallow it, nothing horrible will happen to you – it’ll just be eliminated through your bowels, but better not to swallow.

3) The best oils to do this is sunflower and sesame oil. You should experiment which different oils and see which one fits you the best.

My Thoughts

Oil pulling is something we all should try. It is extremely simple, and involves nothing more than buying a bottle of good cold pressed oil, and swishing it every morning. It’s just like brushing your teeth.

Oil pulling works because it heals our cells, which are damaged every day by toxins. We all hear a lot of commotion about how good antioxidants are. Well, by oil pulling, we are essentially doing what anti-oxidants are doing. By oil pulling, we are ensuring that wellness is the norm for our body, not sickness, and cell damage. Dr. Karach postulates that if we were to do this simple regimen every single day, we could potentially live up to 130-150 years old. This claim is backed by many other scientists.

Some of the ailments that many people have successfully treated with oil pulling includes headaches, bleedy gums, leukemia, as well as acne, digestive problems, and kidney disease. For me, oil pulling has visibly given me softer skin, better sleeping habits, and a higher boost of energy throughout the day. Oil pulling therapy is s something I will continue doing if this continues, and I recommend you all try it for a month to see what it does for you! Back to Bicarboante IVs

Nov 21 – Hubby had a 104 fever, was aching, sweating during sleep.  Royal said to see him if the fever did not reduce, but it did.  After a few days, fever went up to 102, went down.  Aches and pains got really bad, like he could not get up, was tired, and he hurt so much he could not sleep.  Was too uncomfortable to do anything.  Was very worrisome.  He decided to see Royal Nov 30 – tests showed a lot of red (green is good).  Went back on bicarb IV and was asked to come back next week and we did on Dec. 7 – was given B12 shot in scar where Hubby was burnt in arm as a child (scars cause energy blockage), shots (mixture of stuff) in areas where hubby was hurting etc. – for the next few days, hubby was still miserable, but we kept up juicing/blending, diet.  Dec 8 – bicarb IV.  Hubby sweated a little at night.  Dec 9 – bicarb IV.

Dec 9 – Hubby looked the best since the last couple of weeks, seems more energetic and is more upbeat.  We have also been diluting his juices/smoothies so that they are not as strong.  Hubby called (Anne Frahm) and was told Anne diluted her juices with water because they were too strong for her.  So we are trying that too on Hubby.

Will update.

Food Experts Won’t Eat These Foods

A great, simple article on why we should feed our families organic over conventional.  Washing produce does not eliminate pesticides.  Why else is cancer on the rise?

See no. 4 where growers won’t eat their own food!

The 7 foods experts won’t eat

How healthy (or not) certain foods are—for us, for the environment—is a hotly debated topic among experts and consumers alike, and there are no easy answers. But when Prevention talked to the people at the forefront of food safety and asked them one simple question—“What foods do you avoid?”—we got some pretty interesting answers. Although these foods don’t necessarily make up a “banned” list, as you head into the holidays—and all the grocery shopping that comes with it—their answers are, well, food for thought:

20 ways to feed your family for $100 a week.

1. Canned Tomatoes

The expert: Fredrick vom Saal, PhD, an endocrinologist at the University of Missouri who studies bisphenol-A

The problem: The resin linings of tin cans contain bisphenol-A, a synthetic estrogen that has been linked to ailments ranging from reproductive problems to heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Unfortunately, acidity (a prominent characteristic of tomatoes) causes BPA to leach into your food. Studies show that the BPA in most people’s body exceeds the amount that suppresses sperm production or causes chromosomal damage to the eggs of animals. “You can get 50 mcg of BPA per liter out of a tomato can, and that’s a level that is going to impact people, particularly the young,” says vom Saal. “I won’t go near canned tomatoes.”

The solution: Choose tomatoes in glass bottles (which do not need resin linings), such as the brands Bionaturae and Coluccio. You can also get several types in Tetra Pak boxes, like Trader Joe’s and Pomi.

14 worst health mistakes even smart women make.

2. Corn-Fed Beef

The expert: Joel Salatin, co-owner of Polyface Farms and author of half a dozen books on sustainable farming

The problem: Cattle evolved to eat grass, not grains. But farmers today feed their animals corn and soybeans, which fatten up the animals faster for slaughter. More money for cattle farmers (and lower prices at the grocery store) means a lot less nutrition for us. A recent comprehensive study conducted by the USDA and researchers from Clemson University found that compared with corn-fed beef, grass-fed beef is higher in beta-carotene, vitamin E, omega-3s, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), calcium, magnesium, and potassium; lower in inflammatory omega-6s; and lower in saturated fats that have been linked to heart disease. “We need to respect the fact that cows are herbivores, and that does not mean feeding them corn and chicken manure,” says Salatin.

The solution: Buy grass-fed beef, which can be found at specialty grocers, farmers’ markets, and nationally at Whole Foods. It’s usually labeled because it demands a premium, but if you don’t see it, ask your butcher.

25 ridiculously healthy foods you should be eating now.

3. Microwave Popcorn

The expert: Olga Naidenko, PhD, a senior scientist for the Environmental Working Group,

The problem: Chemicals, including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), in the lining of the bag, are part of a class of compounds that may be linked to infertility in humans, according to a recent study from UCLA. In animal testing, the chemicals cause liver, testicular, and pancreatic cancer. Studies show that microwaving causes the chemicals to vaporize—and migrate into your popcorn. They stay in your body for years and accumulate there,” says Naidenko, which is why researchers worry that levels in humans could approach the amounts causing cancers in laboratory animals. DuPont and other manufacturers have promised to phase out PFOA by 2015 under a voluntary EPA plan, but millions of bags of popcorn will be sold between now and then.

The solution: Pop natural kernels the old-fashioned way: in a skillet. For flavorings, you can add real butter or dried seasonings, such as dillweed, vegetable flakes, or soup mix.

Your nutritional guide to grocery shopping.

4. Nonorganic Potatoes

The expert: Jeffrey Moyer, chair of the National Organic Standards Board

The problem: Root vegetables absorb herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides that wind up in soil. In the case of potatoes—the nation’s most popular vegetable—they’re treated with fungicides during the growing season, then sprayed with herbicides to kill off the fibrous vines before harvesting. After they’re dug up, the potatoes are treated yet again to prevent them from sprouting. “Try this experiment: Buy a conventional potato in a store, and try to get it to sprout. It won’t,” says Moyer, who is also farm director of the Rodale Institute (also owned by Rodale Inc., the publisher of Prevention). “I’ve talked with potato growers who say point-blank they would never eat the potatoes they sell. They have separate plots where they grow potatoes for themselves without all the chemicals.”

The solution: Buy organic potatoes. Washing isn’t good enough if you’re trying to remove chemicals that have been absorbed into the flesh.

14 ways to make veggies less boring.

5. Farmed Salmon

The expert: David Carpenter, MD, director of the Institute for Health and the Environment at the University at Albany and publisher of a major study in the journal Science on contamination in fish.

The problem: Nature didn’t intend for salmon to be crammed into pens and fed soy, poultry litter, and hydrolyzed chicken feathers. As a result, farmed salmon is lower in vitamin D and higher in contaminants, including carcinogens, PCBs, brominated flame retardants, and pesticides such as dioxin and DDT. According to Carpenter, the most contaminated fish come from Northern Europe, which can be found on American menus. “You can only safely eat one of these salmon dinners every 5 months without increasing your risk of cancer,” says Carpenter, whose 2004 fish contamination study got broad media attention. “It’s that bad.” Preliminary science has also linked DDT to diabetes and obesity, but some nutritionists believe the benefits of omega-3s outweigh the risks. There is also concern about the high level of antibiotics and pesticides used to treat these fish. When you eat farmed salmon, you get dosed with the same drugs and chemicals.

The solution: Switch to wild-caught Alaska salmon. If the package says fresh Atlantic, it’s farmed. There are no commercial fisheries left for wild Atlantic salmon.

Delicious and easy fish recipes

6. Milk Produced with Artificial Hormones

The expert: Rick North, project director of the Campaign for Safe Food at the Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility and former CEO of the Oregon division of the American Cancer Society

The problem: Milk producers treat their dairy cattle with recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH or rBST, as it is also known) to boost milk production. But rBGH also increases udder infections and even pus in the milk. It also leads to higher levels of a hormone called insulin-like growth factor in milk. In people, high levels of IGF-1 may contribute to breast, prostate, and colon cancers. “When the government approved rBGH, it was thought that IGF-1 from milk would be broken down in the human digestive tract,” says North. As it turns out, the casein in milk protects most of it, according to several independent studies. “There’s not 100% proof that this is increasing cancer in humans,” admits North. “However, it’s banned in most industrialized countries.”

The solution: Check labels for rBGH-freerBST-freeproduced without artificial hormones, or organic milk. These phrases indicate rBGH-free products.

Don’t be fooled by these 11 health food imposters.

7. Conventional Apples

The expert: Mark Kastel, former executive for agribusiness and codirector of the Cornucopia Institute, a farm-policy research group that supports organic foods

The problem: If fall fruits held a “most doused in pesticides contest,” apples would win. Why? They are individually grafted (descended from a single tree) so that each variety maintains its distinctive flavor. As such, apples don’t develop resistance to pests and are sprayed frequently. The industry maintains that these residues are not harmful. But Kastel counters that it’s just common sense to minimize exposure by avoiding the most doused produce, like apples. “Farm workers have higher rates of many cancers,” he says. And increasing numbers of studies are starting to link a higher body burden of pesticides (from all sources) with Parkinson’s disease.

The solution: Buy organic apples. If you can’t afford organic, be sure to wash and peel them.

Last week, we started smoothies based on Victoria’s Boutenko’s categorizing of:

fruits and greens eg. apple and chard leaves (not apple and carrot but carrot leaves)

vegetable and greens (eg. any vegetable and chard leaves)

Hubby complained of a pinched nerve (?) in the back, went to Royal and he said to do the bicarb injection and see in a week, and maybe revise overall protocol.  Will update.

Budwig Diet

Hubby is adding the Budwig diet to his juicing protocol.

Victoria Boutenko ( has great information in her books on juicing – on notable distinction she makes –

(I am paraphrasing)

– should fruits and vegetables be juiced/blended together?

VB says – there should be 3 categories –

greens (leaves of vegetables)

and VB says – greens can be combined with fruits, can be combined with vegetables (non-leafy).

She’s done it since 1993 and has had success after success with her family (out of five, four were very sick) and other people across the world.

Her books are available in local libraries.

GMO Pesticides – Not Good For Your Family

Differing studies

Cultivation of genetically modified plants: more or less pesticide?

(17.11.2009) Two current studies on the environmental influence of genetically modified (GM) plants arrive at differing results. According to one study, significantly more pesticide has been applied to fields since the cultivation of genetically modified plants began in 1996. The other study books substantial environmental relief through GM plants.

One study, authored by Charles Benbrook and published by the American non-governmental organisations The Organic Center and Union of Concerned Scientists, has come to a negative result: since the market entry of herbicide-resistant GM plants in the USA in 1996, the quantity of applied herbicidehas increased by 175 million kilogrammes, of which 46 per cent fall in the years 2007 and 2008 alone. According to Benbrook, primarily in the south of the USA numerous weeds have spread in the meanwhile that have developed resistance to the herbicide agent glyphosate (Roundup) suited to the GM plants. Many farmers attempt to combat these weeds through higher doses of glyphosate or through the application of other herbicide agents. For this reason, a further increase in the amount of deployed pesticide may be expected.

In contrast, a positive balance is found in the study conducted by the British agricultural economist Graham Brookes (PG Economics). He ascertained a world-wide decrease in the application of herbicide between 1996 and 2007 due to the cultivation of GM plants. According to the study, approximately 200 million fewer kilogrammes of herbicide were deployed. However, in contrast to Benbrook, Brookes did not compare the total quantity of herbicide deployed but the quantities of active agent. In the case of soy, according to Brooks, a reduction in deployed herbicide agent of 4.6 per cent in comparison to the level of 1996 was found as a result of the cultivation of herbicide-resistant varieties. In the case of cotton, this figure was 15 per cent.

With regard to insect-resistant plants, the studies arrive at similar conclusions: Benbrook determined a reduction in the application of plant protection agents by 28 million kilogrammes since 1996 as a result of the cultivation of Bt maize and Bt cotton.

According to Brookes, the worldwide application sank by as much as 157 million kilogrammes. Once again, this was stated in terms of the active agent. For this study, primarily cotton contributed to environmental relief through insecticide reduction. However, neither China nor India, which have large field areas of Bt cotton, were addressed by Benbrook.

In total, Brookes calculates a global environmental relief of 17 per cent due to the lowered need for insecticide and herbicide in the cultivation of GM plants. In contrast, Charles Benbrook states the stark increase in glyphosate-resistant weeds as the primary problem. As a result, he expects rising costs, declining yields and increasing environmental strain.

Update – Juicing Against Cancer

This is the second weekend of hubby’s more stringent protocol, using juicing to nourish and detox.

Last weekend – he was aching and in discomfort, sit up, lay down, just did not feel right, sort of fighting flu and not.  Then a couple of days later, he was feeling great.

He got disheartened thinking that those few days were a sign that he was not doing the right thing.   Then, we came upon this website (I have posted this separately) at where this lady decided against chemo from the moment she was diagnosed and, instead, nourished and detoxed her body – she is cancer-free, she does provide an email address so you can fact-check for yourself, which I have not done, but she did list similar symptoms that hubby was going through.  He got quite upset with those few days that we went to eat and he had beef hor fun and turnip and beef hot pot.  Oh well, we had a great time, saw 2012 too.

It was the next day,  we found Alice’s website, where she used Gerson therapy.  Hubby is back to protocol.  Today, started those symptoms again.  So, he is doing energy stuff, meditation, mind things, and continuing juicing.  Today, he had some fish and he actually felt better eating that.  I made a thermos of herbal tea (jasmine, hibiscus, rosehips, chamomile, peppermint, valerian) as most people have advocated sipping at good herbal teas through the day.
